Best place to blow 10 minutes
Ten minutes is just about the worst amount of spare time to have. It's not really long enough to, say, have a bite to eat or have a nice chat with a friend. But it's not short enough to just loll about either. Enter: the Globe Corner Bookstore in Harvard Square. Replete with travel books, maps and language guides, the Globe has everything you need to plan your escape. You know, for when those 10 minutes are up. [90 Mt. Auburn St., Harvard Sq., Cambridge. 617.497.6277. globecorner.com]
Best place for size-10 shoes
The proprietor of Vintage Revenge, Denise Goldhagen, is committed to scouring high and low for her stock: "There's no place I won't look, no distance I won't go." For the amply-heeled, she offers men's vintage footwear (1920s-1970s)—including some Frye, Florsheim and Bally—in sizes up to 13. For the ladies, Goldhagen has a "comfortable" stock of vintage size 10s and a few 11s (1920s-1980s). Designers include Christian Dior and Charles Jordan, but heed her pro tip: "The women's '50s shoes are made so well, it almost doesn't matter who made them." [1105 Mass. Ave., Harvard Sq., Cambridge. 617.498.0999]
