In his ongoing battle against wealthy convenience store owner Christy Mihos, inexperienced Republican gubernatorial candidate Charles Baker announces his running mate will be state Sen. Richard Tisei, R-Wakefield, who single-handedly makes up about 5 percent of the state's GOP leaders. PLUS 1

The Convention Center Authority announces it will add an exhibit space, an auditorium and another hotel to its existing waterfront facility. The plans are still preliminary, as is an explanation as to how the monstrosity will be paid for, and will it appeal to South Bostonians neighbors, who'd prefer other neighboring amenities (like parks) to enormous tourist attractions. Northeastern University shuts down its football team because the school can't afford to spend the millions of dollars it would take to make the Huskies ... um, good. And it only took 74 seasons for the administration to figure that out. MINUS 1

A family of Nigerian dwarf goats is suing rival goat breeders for slander, claiming the herd's good name was tarnished by rumors that they weren't purebreds because of their coloring and large udders. If that case doesn't work out, the goats could always sue for sexual harassment. After all, their eyes are up here. PLUS 1

A power plant accidentally dumps lubricant oil into the Charles River, according to the state's Department of Environmental Protection ... but given the Charles' reputation for cleanliness, it was probably an improvement. PLUS 1

Oprah Winfrey announces she's ending her show's 25-year run, saying the decision "feels right in my bones and feels right in my spirit." It also feels right given a 7-percent ratings dip and the fact that she's starting a new network that's named after her. MINUS 7

Rep. Patrick Kennedy told the Providence Journal last week that Rhode Island Bishop Thomas Tobin hasn't granted him communion since 2007 because of his stance on abortion. Tobin criticized Kennedy for the admission, claiming the church's attempt to manipulate the legislator's public policy with private religious blackmail was a personal matter. MINUS 2

Homeless in Boston

By weeklydig on Fri, Feb 5, 2010 3:50 pm

Our office is directly across from the Pine Street Inn so we have our fair share of homeless wanderers in the neighborhood. Occasionally they come into our building and hang out on the stairs or even, like just the other day, come into our office and move into our bathroom. It's worst when it's really cold and I always feel torn about booting these folks. Life must be hard enough. But at the some time...get the hell out of my office! What would you do?
