PENAL CODE

By DAN SAVAGE

A few nights ago, I got drunk and knocked on my roommate's door and confessed my attraction to him while he was lying in bed in nothing more than his skivvies.

THIS WEEK IN THE DIG

JAMAICA PLAIN EAST

Amidst laundromats and auto-glass garages of east-side JP, you'll find more than just that dead-of-winter house party, to which a roommate once dragged me despite fierce reluctance to the promise of stale beer; there's also a cemetery.

RED EYE AT THE RED ROOM

Saturday, Cafe 939 will host the first installment of Red Eye at the Red Room, a monthly series that seeks to showcase local musicians while doling out a due pat on the back to some of Boston's finest concert photographers. Presented by Agent Bishop, a Boston-based talent booker, the series' kickoff will feature sets from Neutral Uke Hotel, a ukulele-only outfit that covers Neutral Milk Hotel, and the debut performance of the Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library, brainchild and recent project of the Motion Sick frontman.

MACHETE

A .44 magnum opus

Back in 2007, Machete was nothing more than a bang-bang-shoot-'em-up trailer that ran before Grindhouse, the blood-soaked, blockbuster double feature from Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino. In two minutes, Rodriguez makes a modern-day Mexican revolutionary out of Danny Trejo by offering up a plot rife with the tension of the illegal immigration controversy in the southwestern United States.

DORCHESTER

I'm a born-and-raised Bostonian, but as much as I'd like to play the streetwise townie, the project of writing up Boston's largest and most diverse neighborhood was daunting.

BOB AND BOB

FACE OFF AT SPACE 242, 10.31.08

There's like a happy tree-off about to happen or like good Bob Ross vs. evil Bob Ross.

Bob: Well, he's syndicated and I'm still on local TV ... he makes more money and I like to make people happy.

How many happy trees did you draw?

Bob: I didn't keep count.

What do you think about mustard?

Good on hot dogs, not good on hamburgers. I'm very firm on this.

Do you know mustard?

The campaign in review

What a long, hard slog it's been

Lookin' back on it all now, you kind of get whiplash, don'tcha? But is that normal? You betcha! (Damn you, Palin, and your infectious, folksy inflections! Get out of Media Farm's brain!) This presidential process has been years in the making, and whether or not your man won, it's still a letdown. Let's review, shall we?

[Letters] LET_DefaultSM

If only racial inequality could be solved in a day by a comic strip ...

In response to the letter (10.22.08) criticizing Tak's "Secret Asian Man" comic: I was with him right up until the racial epithets. He had a point worth making but for the wrong reasons.

[Letters] LET_DefaultSM

Wow. Lynn has two entire brunch places?

I'm sick and tired of you reviewing only places in Boston or Cambridge. Come to Lynn, City of Sin (actually it is the city that is ... in).

It's "RickRoll'D"

Just a quick heads-up, I accidentally typed: "weeklydig.com/gidthis08" into my browser and was immediately forwarded to the Rick-Rolled vid on YouTube.

Oh Cruel World!

Dear Pretentious Coffee Shop Bastards,

Why do you constantly try to outsmart me? OK, I get it, café au lait is not pronounced "ow late."

ROLE MODELS

A surprisingly hilarious formula comedy

Combine smartass, precocious kids, a crass comedy, a sitcom plot and adults with relationship problems and it sounds exactly like a movie that I will invariably hate. Role Models was set to be nothing but a teeth-grinding exercise in tortuous sophomoric humor. And then I saw the damn thing and laughed myself silly.

A Robust Porter for the holidays

Though winter doesn't start until December 21st, we've already rolled back the clocks, the sun is setting at 4:30pm, that cold snap is in the air and our heating bills have begun to rise. Time for a beer! A hearty beer, right?!

RUSSIAN CIRCLES AND BORIS STORM THE STAGE WITH DRONE POWER
