One Head

By CHRISTINE LIU
"The moniker came from seeing these iceberg lettuce bags that said 'Contains one head'—like a baseball hat," says a bespectacled Frank Criscione, explaining the namesake of his homegrown scarf label One Head. Sewn together from meticulously chosen sections of used T-shirts, Criscione's scarves not only resonate with color and pattern, but also with the unmistakable feel—and comforting smell—of well-worn cotton jersey. "I like to make a lot of things, save a lot of things; I had drawers stuffed with T-shirts, and I had to get rid of them," says Criscione of the auspicious beginnings. A waiter at Radius at the time, Criscione created a one-off scarf for his friend and pastry chef P.J. Waters' birthday, and the accessory picked up speed—and stylish cred from co-proprietor Christopher Myers—with serendipitous success.
Criscione, currently an industrial design student at MassArt and waiter at Myers + Chang, spent some time raising hell cross-country before settling down in the Boston area. In Chapel Hill, N.C., where he attended school, he cooked in kitchens, worked at Yep Roc Records and played drums in a couple bands. He spent time living in Berkeley, Calif., and Beverly, Mass., before he came into his current residence in Jamaica Plain, where Boomerangs' $1 bin weekend sales at the Brewery help supplement his personal shirt supply. He also welcomes the opportunity to construct personalized scarves: Criscione sewed a gift commissioned by a friend out of her husband's collection of AIDS Walk shirts, and made one for his own son out of the baby clothes he outgrew. "He's 6 now," he says. "That's really sweet."
"I wanted to go to culinary school," Criscione says, "But then I discovered this industrial design field." Although the ID program at MassArt is very product design based ("we do a lot of branding work—product development, problem solving"), his personal interests focus on housewares, ceramics, photography and printmaking; he's presently working on a line of pendant lamps repurposed from vintage pieces of Tupperware. "I have this problem," laughs Criscione, "where I like to do many things."
