Jam-packed with diners, specialty stores, a thriving arts community and the cultural enclave known as Little Armenia, Watertown is no chump of a suburb. It's clear why everyone's moving here.

Begin with the Talk of the Town ... Diner [11 N. Beacon St. 617.923.2369], that is. An award-winning, family-owned joint, their home fries are to die for and locals crave their coffee. The New Yorker Diner [39 Mt. Auburn St. 617.924.9772] is your answer to late-night scavenging, open Fridays and Saturdays 10pm-4am.

Need something meat-free? Red Lentil's [600 Mt. Auburn St. 617.972.9188. theredlentil.com] specialty is veggie/vegan, internationally inspired dishes. If savory is your snack flavor of choice, Fastachi [598 Mt. Auburn St. 617.924.8787. fastachi.com] carries nuts of all kinds: roasted, mixed or raw. For all your caffeinated needs, look no further than Uncommon Grounds [575 Mt. Auburn St. 617.924.9625. myuncommongrounds.com]. Come for the coffee, but stay for their extensive breakfast menu.

Watertown is home to one of the largest Armenian immigrant populations in the US, and its main square is the heart of Little Armenia, packed with a delicious assortment of ethnic markets and stores. First up: the cultural confluence that is Fordee's Falafel & Deli [555 Mt. Auburn St. 617.923.3763. fordeesgrill.com]. Home of "the most delicious falafel roll-ups," their massive Middle Eastern/Mediterranean menu has something for everyone. To re-create your savory finds at home, Massis Bakery [569 Mt. Auburn St. 617.924.0537. massisbakery.com] is your go-to for specialty items: dates, cheeses, olives and Armenian breads. For a little sweetness, check out Sevan's Bakery [599 Mt. Auburn St. 617.924.3243. sevanboston.com], home of delectable fig and pecan baklavas.

Head over to the Arsenal Center for the Arts, home of the New Repertory Theatre [321 Arsenal St. 617.923.8487. newrep.org] and past productions of David Mamet's Speed-the-Plow and David Sedaris' The Santaland Diaries. The Plumbing Museum [80 Rosedale Rd. 617.926.2111. theplumbingmuseum.org] offers a deeper look at the area's innermost workings, beginning with the building itself, a 168-year-old former icehouse.
