Lush Awakenings

Booze-fueled energy drinks go way beyond Red Bull and vodka. But no matter what the night holds, remember that heart palpitations distract from the fun—though you'll probably be too drunk to notice.

DRINK: Sparks, a malt beverage with caffeine, taurine and ginseng—zing!

Your Virgin Caffeine Inspiration: Mountain Dew

What the night holds: A marathon of alcohol athletics from fast-paced flip cup to rockstar raving.

Upper: Get the same fizzy feeling of satisfaction from chugging a cold one with the added sugar high of day-glo soda.

BuzzKill: Neon orange color and tangy sugared taste leaves you thinking it's just hard lemonade with a dash of Tang.

DRINK: Espresso cocktail

Your Virgin Caffeine Inspiration: cappuccino

What the night holds: Hours of engaging conversation at the bar long into the night, even after the live jazz act has packed up.

Upper: Nocturnal sophistication.

BuzzKill: Vaguely frou-frou and hard to find one made with actual espresso—but try the real deal at Noir [1 Bennett St., Harvard Sq., Cambridge. 617.661.8010. noir-bar.com] or West Side Lounge [1680 Mass. Ave., Cambridge. 617.441.5566. westsidelounge.com].

DRINK: V2 Vodka, a premium spirit from Holland infused with caffeine and taurine

Your Virgin Caffeine Inspiration: Water Joe

What the night holds: Spontaneous, skanky dancing wherever you may be, culminating a spotlight solo performance on a platform. Bet on a catfight.

Upper: Versatile enough to be used in your preferred pre-gaming cocktail.

BuzzKill: Doesn't come in fruity flavors (probably a blessing in disguise).
