Jitterbug
By dayvidday on Mon, Apr 14, 2008 9:43 pm
With ROFLcon upcoming, we're turning neotenese over here. And we want Jitterbugs.
The Jitterburg is a new phone designed for older people. It's commercial is quite hilarious:
Many questions: How loud is this phone? How much is this operator? What is Alaina Reed Hall doing back on my mental TV screen?
One of the models has three buttons: the 911 button, the expensive "operator" button and a customizable button. This button can be either: WORK, TOW, MY HOUSE, HOME and FRIEND. This leaves you five fortunes.
A: You are old and still have to work
B: You cannot drive.
C: You live with your family
D: You live away from your family
E: You have one friend.
Call now and get a free car charger? Is that a good idea?
Then there is the Poop:
More about poop later.
RRRRRrrrumble
By dayvidday on Wed, Apr 9, 2008 8:13 pm
As you have probably heard, there's a rumble going on at Harpers Ferry. And no, it's not an earthquake or Vince Wilfork's stomach, its the 30th Annual WBCN Rock & Roll Rumble. The talent at each night is awesome, but having been to two nights already, I can also say the crowd is quite excellent, too.
The scene is filled with the players, pushers and phans of the scene. All the bands, all their fans and each one showing a kind of support you only see in the Boston scene. Groups like Me and Joan Collins, Girls, Guns and Glory, Andrea Gillis and the Shills have already played to the best of their ability. Competition tends too bring out the best in people. For more info (including sound samples and reports on the winners, head over to the WBCN page. And get out to support your favorite. They only have one shot.
Rock Chalk Jayhawk

As a former Kansas Jayhawk student, I can tell you the city of Lawrence is one of the finest college towns in the US. There are only a few hippies, the art scene is fully funded and the gutter punks always make for a good rock show. There is a reason William S. Burroughs called it home for so many years--it's chill.
But Saturday night it was not chill--and Monday night it was pure madness.
Saturday in downtown Lawrence when we beat new arch-rival UNC:
Here's the city Monday:
Lawrence is so named because it was founded by people from Massachusetts. The main drag that runs through town? Mass Ave. of course.

Tim Haslett RIP
By dayvidday on Wed, Mar 19, 2008 10:47 am
It is impossible to explain Tim Haslett to those who did not know him, but I will try. Tim worked at various record stores all around Boston. Boston Beat, Biscuithead, Other Music, Twisted Village, Planet, you name it. He knew so much. Tim knew what was going to be big. Always. He taught me personally about labels like Kompakt and BPitch Control. His descriptions on records were worth more than the records. He told me all about Lil Jon and how big Lil Jon was going to be. I did not believe him for one second. He used words like sawtooth. He loved Thomas Brinkmann. He spent endless hours tracking down DJ Screw CDRs, eventually finding a distributor in the depths of the Bayou. He bought 40 DJ Screw CDRs. They sold out in one day. There are thousands of stories like this and they can be told by thousands of people.
Tim was about as special as a person could be. I will never know anyone with such a devotion to music, a knowledge of music, a passion for music. I worked with Tim for many years and learned quickly that when he opened his mouth, you just stopped what you were doing and listened. Intently. I follow his advice to this day. I moved here in part because of him. His aesthetic is mine. His passion is mine. He was a maven of mavens, a dream in a world of nightmares. He was, in his own words and in his own way, the Angel of History. He will be missed by many many different people from all over the world. He is the kind of person you miss so dearly, you are overcome with grief. He was ours ... and now he is gone.
And while he may be gone, he lives on in our hearts, our minds and--more than anything--inside of the music we listen to every single day of our lives.
There will be a memorial service Friday, March 21st at the Friends Meeting, 5 Long Fellow Park (off Brattle, near Harvard Square) at 3PM.
"This is how one pictures the angel of history. His face is turned toward the past. Where we perceive a chain of events, he sees one single catastrophe which keeps piling wreckage and hurls it in front of his feet. The angel would like to stay, awaken the dead, and make whole what has been smashed. But a storm is blowing in from Paradise; it has got caught in his wings with such a violence that the angel can no longer close them. The storm irresistibly propels him into the future to which his back is turned, while the pile of debris before him grows skyward. This storm is what we call progress." -- Walter Benjamin

Sun Conjunct Neptune
When planets are in conjunction with one another, the celestial bodies involved rendezvous closely together in the heavens and there is a blending of their individual planetary energies. This Sunday night (9:03pm to be exact) sees a conjunction of the Sun and Neptune, when your Solar Path—which represents your personal strength, your identity and your life's direction—becomes shrouded in the ethereal veil of misty blue Neptune. This influence can most easily be described as an up and down shift of your self confidence and focus. One moment it will seem that all of your plans are falling into place, your eyes are firmly set on the prize, you feel you have a distinct idea of who you are and where you're going. The next moment you find yourself avoiding your responsibilities and lazing around in a self-deceptive and disillusioning Neptunian fog.
Like an evening in a 19th century opium parlor full of angels belly-dancing to a Sigur Rós soundtrack, Neptune's energy is intoxicatingly alluring—your imagination wanders as you become temporarily spellbound within Neptune's powerful force. Confronting unpleasant realities like angry bosses or perhaps your very overdrawn bank account will have you wanting to slither away in the opposite direction. You may develop unusual whims as a response to a flood of unexplainable emotions. I know drinking some absinthe then dressing up in a giant bunny suit and hanging out with Furries in a dog pile sounds comforting now, but when your emotional yo-yo comes back up and the Sun peeks it's rays through the Neptune cloud ("Mark, is that you?? What the hell are you wearing???") it's bound to be just a little embarrassing. Confusion and disappointment are the result of attaching yourself to unrealistic fantasies and expectations at this time.
The best way to balance this conjunction is by expressing your Neptunian energy outwardly and being receptive to the Sun's promptings simultaneously. Neptune's pleasures are in creative expression, so outlets such as writing poetry, playing music, sketching, going to see a film or reading literature are good ways to integrate this energy into your life in a positive way. Expressing yourself artistically within the progressive movement of your Solar Path will cultivate a higher sense of purpose. Employment situations will be either extremely rewarding or totally uninspiring, so now is a good time to evaluate your work situation. If your job is beginning to feel a bit like Office Space ...then maybe it's time to move on.

Mercury Droppings
By Lauren DeVain
January 30th – February 5th
This week we venture into one of the busiest seven days of astrological activity this year. Today, January 30th, the planet Mars—in retrograde since mid-November goes direct into Gemini. Venus conjoins with Jupiter in Capricorn on Friday, and Monday night into Tuesday morning brings us a conjunction between the Sun and the planetoid Chiron! All these cosmic happenings will have even the most intuitively dense people wondering what in the hell is going on. This week, though, let's focus on that big, bad, ugly influence that began on Monday, January 28th—Mercury in retrograde. If you were wondering why Monday and Tuesday were your own personal nightmare it's because Mercury in retrograde (in addition to Mars in retrograde) fucked your shit up.
When a planet goes retrograde, the normal operation of things that the planet rules over work retroactively, or "in reverse". For Mercury, it happens three times a year for three weeks at a time and will do until February 19. Sometimes equated with the Celtic god Lugh, Mercury is the divine winged messenger who rules over focused thinking, non-verbal forms of communication, travel and trade. Yeah, so this cosmic trickster is now responsible for important documents becoming misplaced, bills getting lost in the mail, computers crashing, cars breaking down, and cell phones becoming non-operational when we need them most. Basically, Mercury becomes the god of Epic Fails.
Mercury retro's influence especially affects Virgos and Geminis whose ruling planet is Mercury. You will be most prone to these inevitably maddening circumstances (if you're a Virgo who works as a delivery driver for UPS, for example, hiding under rocks is not discouraged). You should concentrate on repairing and reflecting on and the problematic things in your life. Avoid serious traveling at all costs but if you must seriously travel, allow time for inevitable delays: runway taxi-ing, uncomfortable security searches, ralphing up airplane food. Also: Apple + S is good. Apple + S is your friend. Take the time to double-check things and you'll be pulling out a lot less of your hair in the next few weeks, I promise ... Yours,
Lauren DeVain.
