ART THESES

By LUCY BARBER

As my apartment sits at Hemenway and Huntington, I am subjected on a daily basis to the students of The School of the Museum of Fine Arts. I'm sick and tired of how awful they make me feel about myself. I may not have their talent (or asymmetrical haircuts), but you should have seen my sidewalk chalk art back in the day. For anyone who can silence their personal insecurities, the annual thesis exhibition is a must-see. The final installment is the last in an ongoing showcase of the graduate students from a joint degree program of Tufts University and the MFA. It is brimming with the usual shenanigans that I've come to expect from these artistes. And by that, I mean it is breathtaking and discouragingly accomplished. Sarah Williamson is among the four chosen grads on display and she brings a meticulously crafted perspective through her work with video stills. Youngsun Lee's gift is equally soul-crushing for the rest of us common folk. Lee's work recalls the sparse genius of Josef Albers and traditional Korean culture through the medium of oil on canvas. The remaining work is anything but repetitious, solidifying the inventiveness of these young creators. The bastards!

Health and Human Services Public Hearing

“One of the most heart breaking things for me is the great number of homeless veterans,” said Ralph Cooper, executive director of Veterans Benefits Clearinghouse. “As you can tell, I’m getting older and my gray hair tells the truth. You can’t imagine how painful it is for me to talk with men and women who served in Vietnam, men and women who are young, coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq and they are homeless. How disgraceful is that?”
