SKATE 2 | XBOX 360, PS3

ELECTRONIC ARTS | 1.21.09

I've never touched a skateboard outside of video games, where obligations are nil and full-body fractures are but an abstract concept. This iron-willed martinet demands exacting precision right out of the box. It's straight-up frustrating to redo every challenge dozens of times, but that makes the satisfaction of realizing exactly how and why you suck all the more fulfilling. The stick-flicking controls are more authentic than bashing Tony Hawk's buttons, but they could be a bit more precise. That hardly undermines a single damn thing, though, and Skate 2 remains a resolute blast, especially when challenging an honest-to-God person and/or lady.

The Middle East is a great venue when it's kind of full--but it can be a mess when it's completely sold out.
