WERS REVOLUTIONS

In 2006, Boston's long-time running electronic radio show, "Revolutions," on 88.9 WERS, met with an untimely end. Fortunately for the stock of local DJs and the electronic music scene, the station had the presence of mind to start it up again earlier this month, and the slate of local talent scheduled to appear in the station's state-of-the-art studio could not be more stocked. Emerson student Will Wheeler has been picked to helm the program, and he's gathered a wealth of Boston producers and DJs to make guest appearances in the months ahead.

"The mantra of Revolutions has always been local, local, local," Wheeler says. " We're looking for people who are making, producing or supporting forward thinking dance music in some way. People that push the envelope really excite us." Local DJs Die Young, Melee, Mistaker and Soul Clap have all been slated to record DJ sets for broadcast on the show, which airs Saturday nights at midnight. The program runs until 4am. "So far the response has been great," says Wheeler. "We're glad to be back."

Revolutions has a long history in churning out some of our best-known local electronic talent. Both Morgan Page, now a superstar producer, and one of Boston's brightest new stars, Red Foxxx, got their first DJ gigs via the radio show. The most recent graduate of the show, DJ Gina Turner, is currently booking gigs in LA with her partner Louisahhh!!! as DJ duo Stacatto. The two made the trip back to Boston where they played at the wildly popular Hearthrob night at the Middlesex Lounge in Cambridge. We were there, and people were losing their minds.

In addition to Wheeler, Alexandra Ragheb, and Ric Schnupp make out the rest of the radio roster. The four-hour broadcast features two full hours of DJ mixes—one from an international guest in the first hour and in the final hour, where our local scene gets a chance to shine. "We have two full mix hours during the show," says Wheeler. "That's the way this stuff was meant to be enjoyed in the first place right?"

The Middle East is a great venue when it's kind of full--but it can be a mess when it's completely sold out.

Surfer Blood & Turbo Fruits

By ioncrash on Mon, Mar 8, 2010 5:26 pm None-too-shockingly, Jonas Stein of Turbo Fruits (formerly of Be YourOwn Pet) turns out to be a pretty chill guy. After all, the dude’s written more songs about weed than I care to list right now.
