"Nice melodies," is what my progressive house-loving roommate said as this bumped from my stereo speakers, and she's right. Pantha du Prince has the best melodic instinct in dance music today, but he really shouldn't. Big dummies like BT should own the garish melody crown, yet Hendrik Weber has an ethereal charm that puts others to shame. Panda Bear (of Animal Collective) knows this, so he sings as a guest on "Stick to My Side," though the rest of this instrumental delight could be sung along to. Weber comes from Hamburg, Germany, home of the Dial label—a quintessentially minimal label with an emphasis on simple beats and computer-generated synths. This would lead one to think this music is boring and the beats merely consistent—not the case. The second track alone ("Abglanz") is a spectacularly dense tumbling of vibraphones and percussive functions but still sounds sparse and delicate. As with the best electronic producers, there is nothing like Pantha du Prince.

Copeland/ I Can Make A Mess at Middle East 3/6/10

The Middle East is a great venue when it's kind of full--but it can be a mess when it's completely sold out.
