Turpentine Brothers

Local three-headed wrecking crew heads west

By MARTIN PAVLINIC

Turpentine Brothers have been holding down the fort as one of Boston's most dependably exciting bands for almost four years now. The trio bashes out a kind of rhythm 'n' garage, punk-gospel wreckage that rattles windowpanes and spills beers. The organ brings a holy fear to the proceedings, while the searing guitars call to mind some serious mod/postpunk/psychedelic magic. It's all held down by tough, unflinching drums. After all these years of badass stomping, it'll be tough to let them go, but Thursday they play their farewell show, bidding our city adieu as they head west for warmer climes. "We really needed a change of pace, and we love it out west," says drummer Tara McManus. "I wanna slow down a lot, to have more time to just play and work on stuff. We could book shows in our little town maybe. And have chickens and cats." Organist Zack Brines isn't making the move, but McManus is keeping positive. "It's not hard to do the long distance thing anymore, or maybe we can get Zack to relocate. I have faith that you gotta follow your heart and things that are important will find a way of working themselves out." At least they'll leave us with a wealth of material to chew on after the show, while they adjust to their new surroundings. A new 12-inch EP is out on Alien Snatch and a 7-inch on Red Lounge is out now with a forthcoming domestic single as well. Bon voyage, Turpentines.

Attention Artists! Stop the Orphan Act!

By weeklydig on Mon, May 5, 2008 12:23 pm

Two bills were submitted to congress at the end of April — one to the House and one to the Senate — called the Orphan Works Act of 2008. Congress is looking to have this act passed and signed into law by George Bush by June 8, 2008, less than two months after it was introduced.

In a nutshell, this act may put many of you creative people in a tight spot when it comes to copyrighting your images and jeopardize long term royalties.

i had no idea what i was getting myself into last saturday at the theatre offensive's annual benefit, climacts ... pop! the blindingly neon invitation could only guarantee great things, so together my friend and i succumbed to this subterranean world of glittery swathes of makeup, adonis gyrations, reaaaaally strong ketel one cosmos and excellent chandelier earrings spilling from the lobes of artistic director abe rybeck.

ROFL'n all over the place

By E.T. on Fri, Apr 25, 2008 4:42 pm

As we all know, ROFLCon is underway in all its amazingness. And apparently everyone else is just as excited as we are, including Wired, Los Angeles Times and even the friggin Guardian. If you're lucky enough to be attending, make sure to stop by and see us at our table. We've got (what we think are) the most awesome T-shirts ever.
