ST. VINCENT

Let's get preggers

By Jan Rosenfeld

MU_StVincent

The fiery troubadour St. Vincent storms the city on the first of March, bringing along her own personal brand of cosmic indie-rock. She could make mom jeans and an appliqué vest look cool, but you'll probably be too busy getting your face melted by her axe-shredding to notice. Last time she came to town, she put a heel through her guitar during a barrage of fuzz-laden feedback. Hell hath no fury, eh?

2007 earned big things for Annie Clark, the captivating multi-instrumentalist behind St. Vincent. Hot off tours with Sufjan Stevens and The Polyphonic Spree (as the resident guitar hero) Clark locked herself in the studio and emerged with Marry Me, a sultry love letter of an album hailed for its genuine "holy shit" factor. With styles ranging from Parisian ballad to garage rock, the record skillfully blends the sensibilities of a studied musician with the pumped-up teenager who just wants to rock. Credited on her debut are Brian Teasley (Man or Astro-man?) and Mike Garson (David Bowie's pianist)—an impressive rogues' gallery. Live, Clark imbues her songs with all sorts of curveballs, utilizing a loud-as-hell kick box and an inexplicable severed female hand that makes clapping noises. Expect the set to include album staples, Beatles and Nico covers, and the concert-only version of "Bang, Bang," a murder mystery straight out of The Maltese Falcon.

No pressure or anything, but a lovely young couple got engaged during a recent St. Vincent set at The Middle East Upstairs. Now that we're in the larger room, who's willing to step up and have a kid or two?

I just fled the dining room at the hotel because I ruined Texas-shaped waffles for everyone.  I got four hours of sleep last night, and Jess and I just shuffled off for free breakfast like zombies.

Like a cool kid, I slept through my alarm back in Boston yesterday morning, scrambled to finish packing before my last minute cab showed up, and then forked over $40 for said cab to drag my sleepy ass to Logan for my flight to SXSW.
