DAFT PUNK'S ELECTROMA
By CARRIGAN DENNY-BROWN
Daft Punk is already "la grande fromage" when it comes to electronic music, but their feature-length arthouse film debuted to mixed reviews and, like good cheese, caused quite a stink. Across vast Californian desertscapes, two robots ride, stoic and silent, on a quest to become human. That's what the CliffsNotes would read and, if this review were a book report, then BLAM! I'd be done. But Electroma is more of an experience than a story. Dialogue-free, its triumph is the cinematography. Jarringly beautiful and strange, the scenes ultimately hypnotize—like staring into the expanses of the Grand Canyon or listening to Brian Eno for the first time. Some people would call this "boredom," but DP says, "It's a movie that does not require your brain to function." Meaning that with a projector and some pot butter, viewers will be blown away.
