THE ICE STORM: CRITERION COLLECTION
Hulk it ain't
By David Day
My plan worked! Unlike, say, a double-disc collector's edition of, say, National Treasure, Criterion picks movies that deserve the in-depth treatment. Ang Lee's 1997 masterpiece of the morality-free suburban wasteland of 1973—complete with key parties, an accidental electrocution and nubile sexuality—is worth revisiting again and again. As the film progresses, the silence becomes more important than the dialogue and poignant moments of solitude become amplified like one long emotional crescendo. It's such a compelling work that even interviews with the costume designer are worth watching. And the cast: Kline, Weaver, Allen, Maguire, Ricci, Wood, Holmes, Janney? Truly one of the greatest movies of the '90s. We're betting Criterion won't do the same with Hulk.
