FRIGHTENED RABBIT

By BRENT T. INGRAM

DefYo_1102FrightRabbitLG

During most of 2007, Glasgow's Frightened Rabbit was gurgling under the surface, a daring reimagining of Americana proliferated through ceaseless touring. When The Midnight Organ Fight dropped last summer, its fealty to pop took them to another level. We found singer Scott Hutchison on the other end of a phone in Brooklyn.

I USUALLY AVOID SUCH A CLICHÉD QUESTION, BUT WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR BAND NAME?

It was, in fact, my mother who nicknamed me that. I had a fear of other kids. I'm still scared of kids. I think they're more aggressive than they used to be.

RABBITS ARE ALWAYS EATEN. THEY'RE LIKE FOOD, BASICALLY.

They're quite plentiful in supply as well. At least if they have a short life, they have plenty of intercourse.

I HOPE YOU DON'T GET EATEN.

I certainly hope not. At least not in that way [laughs] ... I didn't imply anything there.

YOU GET A LOT OF GOOD PRESS. IS THERE ANYONE WHO DOESN'T LIKE YOU?

Funny thing, the only newspaper that my mum and dad get delivered to their house absolutely ripped into the record. They like the band and stuff, but the first review they read was a really awful one in The Scotsman.

ANY NEW BANDS FROM SCOTLAND WE SHOULD LOOK OUT FOR?

The Twilight Sad and We Were Promised Jetpacks. It's a great name!

DO PEOPLE LISTEN TO COUNTRY MUSIC IN SCOTLAND?

Line dancing is huge in Scotland, actually, amongst pensioners and older people. Kenny Rogers is really, really popular in Scotland.

DO YOU LINE DANCE?

Not yet. It's quite a sedate form of dancing isn't it? It's mostly so you can dress up and wear funny hats. There's not much going on. It's like country Tai Chi. But I have years ahead of me, so talk to me when I'm 50.

Homeless in Boston

By weeklydig on Fri, Feb 5, 2010 3:50 pm

Our office is directly across from the Pine Street Inn so we have our fair share of homeless wanderers in the neighborhood. Occasionally they come into our building and hang out on the stairs or even, like just the other day, come into our office and move into our bathroom. It's worst when it's really cold and I always feel torn about booting these folks. Life must be hard enough. But at the some time...get the hell out of my office! What would you do?
