SCAMPER

By David Day

All good things must come to an end, or so they say, and this Saturday sees the end of one of Boston's most epic power pop bands—Scamper. With 129 shows, 14 full songs and three full years of Scamper Nation blog posts under their belt, the much-loved quartet plays their final notes for an eager crowd. Bassist Brendan Boogie, en route to get gas in Somerville, let's us down easy.

THIS IS THE LAST SHOW FOR SCAMPER. WHAT'S HAPPENING? GIVE ME THE SCOOP.

The singer is a big-shot in the German porn industry now, so he's left us behind. Scat porn. Apparently, it's more lucrative to be in scat porn than it is to be in a power-pop band.

AND WITH THE EURO CONVERSION THE WAY IT IS, IS HE GOING TO WIRE MONEY BACK TO YOU?

He offered to do that, but we don't want that money. We don't want his dirty, dirty scat money.

ARE YOU GOING TO BE SAD?

We cry privately, in our group hugs before each rehearsal.

DO YOU HAVE A BAND PSYCHIATRIST LIKE METALLICA?

We've been working with a life coach the last six months. He's going to wear a Cosby sweater and be sitting in on tambourine.

OH, YOU HIRED HIM! YOU WENT STRAIGHT TO THE TOP.

We don't need any cheesy life coach happening.

DO YOU HAVE A BIG FINALE?

We were thinking of, instead of playing our hit songs and dancing around with everybody, we were just going to play 30 minutes of noise-rock and turn our backs on the audience and look at each other. We want to disappoint them so people can be like, "Thank God they're gone."

IS THERE GOING TO BE A SPIN OFF PROJECT?

There already is one: The Brenden Boogie Band, where I get to be a tyrant. I'll fine people on stage for missing notes like James Brown used to do. I try to make them less distracting than me, so if they try to wear something on stage that is a little too loud, I will confiscate it.

IS DRINKING ALLOWED ON-STAGE?

They can drink water. I'm Muslim so I frown on that. It's my Muslim solo tyrannical music project. It's kind of cliché. Same old same old.

“One of the most heart breaking things for me is the great number of homeless veterans,” said Ralph Cooper, executive director of Veterans Benefits Clearinghouse. “As you can tell, I’m getting older and my gray hair tells the truth. You can’t imagine how painful it is for me to talk with men and women who served in Vietnam, men and women who are young, coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq and they are homeless. How disgraceful is that?”
