Rogue Burlesque: School's Out

stripping her way through college ... and beyond

May is matriculation month, and for a city this saturated with Che shirts and Dalí posters, that means something. Whether you're donning tassels or rocking a hairnet, one thing's for certain: more room in bars. Cambridge's own punk cabaret set is joining forces with Truth Serum Productions to celebrate higher education with a night of lowbrow entertainment. Forget everything you learned about anatomy with the Grey's-defying contortion of Bella Curva and throw out the phrase "heteronormative!" one last time with special guest Ms. Honeysuckle Hype.

Erin Harpe & the Delta Swingers

bb queen

Fans of sexy disco will immediately recognize Erin Harpe as the boot-stompin' frontlady for the pumpin' JP electro group Lovewhip ... so it might come as a bit of a shock to learn this Disco Terror not only has a Chesapeake Bay blues background, but is also revered as an accomplished contemporary blues guitarist. We're talking about the good kind of shock, though—like finding out your chair vibrates. This blues chanteuse breathes new, whiskey-soaked life into the likes of Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe, with a sound that's uniquely Charles River Delta.

Mind Control

Celebrates five years of slurping

The Underbar Super Lounge celebrates its fifth year as one of the Bean's great late-night hotspots and bar-themed bars, with a half-decade anniversary bash featuring the underground New York house duo of Richie Santana and Peter Bailey, better known collectively as Mind Control. On top of being refreshingly upfront about the whole "sinister plot" thing, the former headliners of the Together Fest come packing gritty after-afterhours synths and beats perfect for the apocalyptic throwdown. Grabbing a ticket now nets you access to the VIP cocktail reception, and that is a very good thing.

SoWa Open Market Opening

think locally, shop locally

This South End fixture returns for its seventh year of tingly neighborhood fetishism with shops, stalls and stalwarts hawking the finest foods and wares that the Back Bay has to offer. With live entertainment provided by local musicians, regional masterpieces and tchotchkes by area artisans, and the finest South Boston delicacies baked right around the corner, this little homeslice of heaven brings a whole new wrinkle to the locavore's dilemma—namely, where the hell do you even start?

SHPONGLE

shpontaneous combustion

What began as an attempt for musical duo Simon Posford and Raja Ram to translate their experiences during a solar eclipse in India (which may or may not have involved drugs) into a 20-minute audio track, expanded into a 14-year-long project combining Western electronica and Eastern instrumentals (which may or may not include drugs). The duo's upbeat/downtempo fusion goes down like an exotic bottle of Nyquil, with Ram's flute arrangements neatly darting in and out of Posford's dub riddims.

Buzzcocks

another music

Short of that other group of foul-mouthed Brits with an inalienable punk energy and a tendency to probe the outer limits of obscenity, few other bands have had such a marked impression on modern music, managing to godfather everything from the entire pop-punk genre to the legitimacy of independent labels. That, and they did it all while being polite. Well, at least relatively polite. Without them, we probably never would have had The Smiths or Oasis ... maybe they should apologize for Oasis.

RUSSIAN CIRCLES AND BORIS STORM THE STAGE WITH DRONE POWER

By weeklydig on Fri, Aug 13, 2010 10:28 am

A night of audible excellence, despite the miniscule flaws, deserves a humble nod and applause to Boris and Russian Circles for providing Boston with intensity and care towards the people who helped them get where they are
