DRINK ALL DAY WITHOUT GETTING (TOO) DRUNK

By PINK LADY

For five glorious days in July, cocktail nerds from all corners of the world descend upon New Orleans for the Tales of the Cocktail festival. Days are packed with cocktail demos, tastings, competitions, seminars, book signings, tours and special events, followed by nights spent mixing and mingling with some of the brightest talent in the spirits industry. With whimsical architecture, an intoxicating jazz soundtrack and rich cocktail history, NOLA is the perfect setting for the event.

In addition to palling around with friends at Tales, there is serious work to be done by the cocktail enthusiast. Seminars begin at 10am each day, and every waking moment of the event is paired with drink. If not properly prepared, the neophyte could find themselves passed out at noon. LUPEC Boston has called upon some of the brightest stars (aka biggest boozers) in the mixology galaxy to assemble these key tips for drinking all day at Tales—or in any other festivous context—without getting (too) drunk.

1.

Low-alcohol sips like the one below will allow an even, glowing buzz that lasts for hours. Some sources suggest rosé and PBR with a bourbon back—consume at your own risk.

2.

Eat often, eat wisely. Some swear by the raw bar, others by "good-fat foods" like avocados and smoked salmon, and others by frequent consumption of cheeseburgers. For heaven's sake, just eat something.

3.

Take herbal remedies as a preemptive strike. Milk thistle before you start (for your liver), B12 & B6 (for your hangover). One source swears by activated carbon pills: two with the first drink, one per each additional drink. All can be purchased at Whole Foods.

4.

Last, but most important of all: Drink water. One 8-ounce glass per cocktail does the trick.

Soldier on, drunkies! May you have 10 good cocktails in 10 hours.

HALF SINNER, HALF SAINT

2 oz sweet vermouth

2 oz dry vermouth

1 barspoon pastis

lemon twist

Combine both vermouths in a rocks glass with ice and mix. Garnish with a lemon twist. Float pastis on top.

CIN-CIN!

I just fled the dining room at the hotel because I ruined Texas-shaped waffles for everyone.  I got four hours of sleep last night, and Jess and I just shuffled off for free breakfast like zombies.

Like a cool kid, I slept through my alarm back in Boston yesterday morning, scrambled to finish packing before my last minute cab showed up, and then forked over $40 for said cab to drag my sleepy ass to Logan for my flight to SXSW.
