KONAMI

NINTENDO WII

3.17.09

Sure, the Wii's great for bowling and shooting, but it's not a natural fit for everything. Who'd want to play soccer on a system built entirely around arm movements? That's like boxing with a Dance Dance Revolution pad. Konami makes a valiant attempt anyway with the Wii edition of Pro Evolution Soccer 2009. There's enough goodness here to satiate hardcore soccer dudes, including several European-league teams, numerous play modes of variable depth and some of the best commentary found in any sports game. Too bad the awkward Wii-centric interface slightly hobbles the end result. PES 2009 uses the Wii remote like a computer mouse, with actions being triggered by dragging a cursor and pressing one of two buttons. That might be the best route to take with the idiosyncratic controller, but it asks a lot of those who've only played soccer games on consoles. Fortunately, you can play with the Wii's Classic Controller, which feels far more natural. Of course, that also strips the game of its character. Still, for Wii-owning footy fans uncomfortable with PC-style soccer games, it's a big improvement. [

The Middle East is a great venue when it's kind of full--but it can be a mess when it's completely sold out.

Surfer Blood & Turbo Fruits

By ioncrash on Mon, Mar 8, 2010 5:26 pm None-too-shockingly, Jonas Stein of Turbo Fruits (formerly of Be YourOwn Pet) turns out to be a pretty chill guy. After all, the dude’s written more songs about weed than I care to list right now.
