LUPEC SALUTES EILEN JEWELL

Raise your whiskey glasses to Boston’s rising star

LUPEC likes to dust off old cocktail books and leaf through recipes with fresh ingredients and curious names. We connect their stories and methods to the present through the simple pleasure of drinking them, maybe mixing up something new, and sharing with others. You might say that Eilen Jewell kind of does this with her own brand of music, which draws strength from its roots.

With her new release, Sea of Tears, we salute a woman we admire and her amazing band. Their sound is a natural blend of early rock & roll/folk/blues/country/rockabilly, and hers is an understated, unhurried singing style akin to Billie Holiday or Hank Williams. It all might make you want to dance, drink whiskey or shed a tear in your beer. "I'm Gonna Dress in Black" or last year's "High Shelf Booze" might make you do all three. She's about to take off, so grab a CD at eilenjewell.com, and catch an intimate show while you can.

Here, Eilen shares a drink she likes, the Kalimoxo. "A Kalimoxo is a Basque drink that's served in my favorite hang, Bar Gernika, in my hometown of Boise, Idaho. You take cheap red wine—it has to be cheap or else it won't be as good—and you pour it over ice and stir in an equal amount of Coca-Cola. It's kind of like a poor man's sangria, especially fabulous in the summertime."

It's so snowy that I had to shovel my driveway with rain. Your turn. Get your sarcasm warmed up and finish the sentence: It's so snowy that...
